Additional Value Indicators
GENERALITY
The generality of a patent family is built as a Herfindahl index.

where sij denotes the percentage of citations received by patent that belong to patent class j, out of ni patent classes. A high generality score suggests that the patent had a widespread impact, since it influenced subsequent innovations in a variety of fields. (Class here refers to 4-digit IPC main class)
ORIGINALITY
The originality of a patent family can be defined in the same way, except that it refers to backward citations. Thus, if a patent cites previous patents that belong to a narrow set of technologies the originality score will be low, whereas citing patents in a wide range of fields would give a high score.
An Originality vs Generality plot is a popular visualization for ranking the R&D/innovative capabilities of companies in a given space.
