How to search based on dates?

Searching Patents based on their dates using the quick search form, and command line search form

Using Quick Search form

  1. Select the Quick Search form from the search dropdown
  2. Select the field codes for dates of your choice from the Biblio search dropdown (Field codes for dates are APD, APY, PBD, PBY, PRD, PRY, etc.,)
  3. Mention the dates in the From-To date range search bar as per the selected field code

4. For example, if you want to search by Publication date, then simply select the Pub. Date (PBD) field code from the Biblio search dropdown as shown in the Figure

5. Enter the dates you want to search for in the From-To date range bar, then click the Search option.

6. Here you can also search by merely putting a year in the date range box as shown in the image below

Using Command Line Search form

  1. Select the Command Line Search form from the search dropdown
  2. Enter the field codes for dates of your choice in the search field, then enter the dates
  3. For example, if you want to search by Application date, then simply enter the “APD” field code and enter the dates as shown in the Figure

4. You can also refer the Field code guide present at the right corner for relevant field codes as shown in the Figure

5. Here, you must specify the exact dates yourself to avoid any ambiguity

6. Each date field also has a corresponding year field. Accordingly, Application Date APD has APY, and Publication Date PBD has PBY

7. Therefore, you can use these field codes if you want to search for a year range

8. You can also use BEG and NOW operators in a range query as shown in the Figure below:

(These BEG and NOW operators can be used in both the search forms i.e., Quick Search and Command Line Search forms)

9. Here, APD:[2009-06-01 TO NOW] - matches all dates from June 1, 2009 to current date

And, APD:[BEG TO 2014-12-31] - matches all dates up to Dec 31, 2014 (including Dec 31, 2014)
