Project Operation Modes
A major new enhancement is the introduction of Family and Application Number modes within a Project. So Projects in PatSeer can now operate as if it contains Records or Unique Applications or Families.
Before introduction of this capability, a Project has been based on record numbers and that remains as the default mode for any new project. In this mode, each Record number (with kind code) is treated as a unique record. However if you now set a Project in one of the family modes, the project will display unique families only. Also if you add new records to the project and if they belong to an existing family, they will not show up as separate records and the number of families will be unchanged.
Project Operation Modes | Project Unique Key | Displayed Record |
Records | Record Number with Kind Code
| All records added to the project are displayed as separate results
|
Application
| Application Number
| The sort order decides which record to display in the project results.
|
Simple Family | Simple Family Number | The country preference and sort order is applied over records (from a single family) that have been added to the project.
|
Extended Family | Extended Family Number
| The country preference and sort order is applied over records (from a single family) that have been added to the project

The option changing the mode of a Project is present on performing a mouse click on the down arrow present next to project record count. When you click on the down arrow, Project Operation Mode window will get expanded with options to select different modes.
These options allow you to group project records by SFAM/INPADOC families/unique records. There are 4 main grouping options:
- Records – shows you the exact number of records present in your project
- Applications – Useful when you want to have the patent selected in cases where both the patent and its application are present in the result set. Further, you have options to select preferred record type
- Simple Family – you want to group records within project to show only one member per family
- INPADOC family - you want to group records to one member per family (INPADOC). Further you can specify the country preference
When you select the required project mode and click on set the records in your project are grouped as per the mode. The below snapshot represents current record count (9393) present in the project.

When you apply Project mode as Application number, you can see current record count of project is changed to 9366 unique records. The PatSeer algorithm has selected patent in cases where both the patent and its application are present in the result set.
Once the Project Mode has been changed to any of the option mentioned above then it cannot be changed to previous project mode or any other mode.
