Deduplicating Patents based on Families / Publications
Searching By Families
Simple Families: When searching Families, you can de-duplicate records to one member per family (Simple or Extended/INPADOC). Simple family comprises those records that have exactly the same priority or same combination of priorities. Simple Family members can be interpreted as records that in all probability protect exactly the same invention.
Extended Families: An Extended family (same as INPADOC family) includes records that contain all records that are directly or indirectly linked to at least one common priority. Extended Family members can be interpreted as records that protect the same and also related inventions by the same applicant.

Searching By Publications
- Publication No – In this case the records will be deduplicated based on their published numbers. For example in case of US, the published number for the application and grant are separate and so they will still appear separately in your search result if both the records match your query.
- Application No - In this case the records will be deduplicated based on their Application numbers. So a grant and its application will not show up separately in the search result.
- Show all Kind Codes– No deduplication is done and so you will see all matching records. Multiple kind codes against the same record may also appear as separate search results.
